Rendering service was not only done by Catholics but by others who shared the joys with us. Particularly do we recall the kindness of a neighbor who let us tap his water supply for the workmen as they erected the church building. Others joined our men who volunteered in painting, roofing and whatever way friends could render service. The men along with dedicated pastor assigned to us, worked hard and long as laborers of all skills. The ladies did their share through cleaning and interior beautification.
Selecting a name for the church was no problem since this had been requested by a New York woman who made an outstanding contribution toward the purchase of land and the erection of the church. She stipulated that the church be named Our Lady Star of the Sea. Parishioners have come to have a great devotion to the Blessed Mother under this title.
Baptisms, communions, confirmations, marriages were joyful occasions. Sad though they were, a great service was rendered to those of us in this remote area when our deceased were eulogized from their own church, Novenas, retreats, living rosaries and Stations of the Cross brought us together in spiritual harmony.
As the years went by, many happenings took place. The year 1955 saw the establishment of a nursery-kindergarten. Those who were privileged to attend received a foundation for developing to their full potential. Much of the furnishings of the unit, which was housed in the newly erected parish hall, were won on the nationally televised program, "Queen for a Day" , on which the director appeared.
Other organizations were formed under the umbrella of the Knights of St. Peter Claver, Council and Court #139 were chartered in 1958. The Junior Knights and Junior Daughters were organized later. Our physical properties have come to include a rectory, additional land, improvement of the grounds, and addition ad renovation of the hall and the building of an enclosed Bar-B-Que pit.
Charter members planted the seed and it has been tended well by those who pridefully call Our Lady Star of the Sea parish, "Our Parish". Even the tiniest bit of service is remembered as we reflect upon the history of the parish. True people and events make history and yet we have not singled out anyone by name. We are not overlooking the service of the dedicated pioneering people because names are not mentioned here. Each of us can recognize himself and feel a sense of pride in the fact that he did what he could. But most of all God does recognize us and it is through Him that we share joy of this glorious event.
Our Lady Star of the Sea parish, "OUR PARISH" is working for continued success and toward providing a history in which we can take pride. History is progressive but in completing the chapters that are part of our early years, we continue to pray, work, and love each other as children of God in this church community of Catholic people.
